A robust structure does not rely on excess material everywhere. It has a clear load path, deliberate margins, buildable details, and analysis that looks for the behavior most likely to govern.
DELIBERATE MARGIN
Extra material across most of a structure cannot protect one weak connection, unstable panel, fatigue detail, or overlooked failure mode. The goal is not zero margin. It is the right margin, placed where it protects performance and service life.

Capacity, duty, stability, stiffness, fatigue resistance, connections, and fabrication details are deliberately matched to the work the structure must perform.
DESIGN FROM THE LOAD DOWN
Mass added high in a machine can increase dead, inertial, braking, travel, handling, and support demands throughout the system. The opportunity is greatest while architecture and interfaces can still change.
FIVE WORKING BELIEFS
Very large margins in most of a structure cannot compensate for one weak detail. Material belongs where it supports the required capacity, stability, stiffness, fatigue life, and service needs.
Clearer load paths, lower dead load, fewer difficult details, and more repeatable fabrication can improve performance and reduce cost at the same time. When a real tradeoff remains, it should be made visible.
Manufacturing, purchasing, quality, installation, and suppliers should influence geometry, material, joints, tolerances, access, inspection, handling, and assembly while changes are still inexpensive.
Early analysis compares layouts and exposes load-path problems. Final verification addresses the applicable loads, limit states, connections, and credible failure modes for the completed design.
Dimensions and GD&T should reflect how a part functions, how it will be made, and how quality will verify it. Control tighter than function requires adds cost without adding value.
